South Africa adopts ODF as a national standard
The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) on Friday approved the Open Document Format (ODF) as an official national South African standard. The adoption of ODF by South Africa opens the way for the businesses and government to adopt ODF more widely in their processes. ODF is already an international standard, approved by the International Standards Organisation, or ISO.

OSS project scoops multilingualism award
Dwayne Bailey tells us that Translate.org.za was awarded the coveted Pan South African Language Board award for its contribution to multilingualism and nation building over the past decade. Late last month the First International ODF Users Workshop was held in Berlin. The event was attended by officials representing 20 governments from around the world. South Africa was represented by Aslam Raffee, the chief information officer at the department of science and technology.

Asterisk speeds up call centre response
Achievement Awards Group, a South African motivational organisation, has implemented Asterisk to upgrade the capability of its specialist call centre and to react quickly to the needs of clients.
Asterisk is an open source VOIP (voice over IP) PBX used to drive telephony systems. The call centre solution was set up by the group's IT partner, Clarotech Consulting.
