A few weeks ago, I switched my development environment from Windows to Linux, on a project which was developed so far on Windows only. In this post, I want to describe the issues that brought me to this switch, a short overview how I did the actual port, and some observations on Linux for developers.

What Microsoft Doesn't Get - And What I Hope You Do
You know what Microsoft doesn't get? -- For one thing, the Internet. Microsoft doesn't control it. What it used to be able to do in the dark now falls out of its noxious bag of tricks into the Internet's bright light, stage front and center. And there stands Microsoft in the spotlight, with its pants down, and let me tell you, it's not a pretty sight.

My Arch Linux Experiment (Part 2)
Welcome to part two of my Arch Linux experiment, where I am attempting to determine if Arch is a viable replacement for Kubuntu on my machine. Previously, I bombed out big time and here the saga continues.

Open Source but no Open Mind
I've been an Open Source user and advocate for years. When I started using Linux, KDE was the desktop that I discovered, as it was the default desktop for Suse. I quickly learned to appreciate KDE 3.3 and I have upgraded my KDE desktop up until release 3.5.10.

Comments, comments, comments!
Just thought we'd take an opportunity to ask you all to help improve your community and ours by posting comments as much as you can on as many stories and as often as you can.
Far too often stories come and go without anyone providing their opinions of them apart from giving them votes. It would of great benefit to the community if we all participate more often in this way.

What is going on with Ubuntu anyway?
I titled this similarly to my previous post about PCLinuxOS. Why, because I would like to take a crack at 'identifying' Ubuntu in order to give potential users an idea of what it is and who it appeals to. If you came here looking for a sharp criticism of Ubuntu, this ain't it.

Linux is losing its stable title
Linux has a reputation for stability. Because it is based on the Unix framework it has an inbuilt stability where if one process crashes, other processes are not effected. Pure Linux is still supremely stable. Then along came Jones.

Why Linux does not look like Windows
One interesting remark I read in some comments is that Linux distribution are not successful because they don't look enough like Windows. Apparently if someone completely copied the interface of Windows and slapped that on top of Linux, Windows users would migrate in droves and Microsoft would be bankrupt. Well, not really. Let me explain.

The first time I’ve ever been disappointed by Slackware
I guess I probably shouldn’t be too surprised, because I knew that Pat Volkerding has been working with my least favorite desktop environment and it’s been in /current for a while now. But I guess a part of me still was holding out a childish hope that Slackware 13.0 release would be KDE 3.5.10.

Is the Linux Desktop Too Much Like Windows, Mac OS X?
A complaint you hear quite often is that the Linux desktop environments, which mostly refers to KDE and GNOME, are trying too hard to be like Windows and Mac OS X.

Negative campaign, positive campaign: Windows 7 Sins vs get GNU/Linux
[Windows7Sins] has received too a lot of negative criticism, thought, centered in an idea somewhat similar to the one I exposed in the beginning: “We must center on the good things free software can offer, instead of the enemy’s bad points”.

When the Contribution Model Fails
I'm a big advocate of Open Source software. However Open Source has it's flaws. The contribution model may be one of it's greatest strengths, but is also a big weakness.
