Free on free > proprietary on free > free on proprietary > proprietary on proprietary

Okay so I think we can all agree that proprietary software shouldn't be promoted by the FOSS community. It also seems to be acceptable to promote the use of free software applications on proprietary OSes. So why is there a problem with promoting the use of proprietary applications on free OSes?

Let's break it down. There are four combinations of apps and OSes:

Can open source stop navel gazing and get real?

http://news.cnet.com

Enterprises and other users deploy open-source software because it works. For those of us in the open-source vendor community, however, too often we waste time talking about issues that have relatively little resonance for the vast majority of users.

Don't Be Evil Means Don't Be Evil

http://www.linuxjournal.com

We here at the news-desk are fans of the near-omnipresent search giant that is Google, and we don't mind saying so. However, though we don't play much poker, we know a spade when we see one, and we're not afraid to call it when we do. One such spade comes in the form of events that played out over the past few weeks with regard to the company's Open Source darling, Android.

Does Free Software deserve a Nobel Prize?

http://www.linux-magazine.com

I woke up on the morning of October 9th to find that President Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize. As I read his acceptance speech, I thought about Free and Open Source Software, and applied parts of his speech to my favorite subject.

The problem with Gentoo

http://thinkmoult.com

I’d like to say that I see Gentoo as a distribution that should allow me to easily use my computer whilst keeping configuration as flexible as possible. Of course with customisation we often get a tradeoff in usability, but nevertheless there are a couple areas where this tradeoff shouldn’t occur...

Denouncing vs. Advocating: In Defense of the Occasional Denouncement

http://ebb.org

For the last decade, I've regularly seen complaints when we harder-core software freedom advocates spend some time criticizing proprietary software in addition to our normal work preserving, protecting and promoting software freedom.

Ubuntu Got it Right with Sudo

http://prairiepy.blogspot.com

The compelling thing to me about Ubuntu was that I kept seeing information on the web about how to do various things in Ubuntu. One issue that previously gave me reservations about Ubuntu was the whole thing with disabling the root account in favor of extensive use of sudo.

This takes the cake (and make mine chocolate!)

http://www.linuxpromagazine.com

I heard recently, and could not really believe it until I saw it, that Microsoft was encouraging people to throw "Tupperware(R) parties" at their homes in order to launch the new version of Microsoft's products. That is right...plain old down-to-earth "homies" extolling the virtues of quickly going to Vista...er...ah...Windows 7.

Learning to love KDE 4 (part I)

http://blogs.pcworld.co.nz

There seems little doubt that KDE 4, the flagship desktop environment used by many Linux aficionados, was released too early. After seven years of solid, steady KDE 3 deployment, KDE 4 was released amidst the much media hoopla and near-universal user disappointment. As a result many users simply avoided it. Including me. At least until recently.

So you want to know how important KDE 4 is?

http://softvision.wordpress.com

I’ve followed and written about the development of the KDE 4.0 project on the old version of this blog. Until now however, I’ve never addressed the criticism that some sections of the Linux community have heaped on it. So I’ll just start.

How Important is KDE 4?

http://jonreagan.wordpress.com

Just by looking at the KDE project, it appears as if development has slowed down. This certainly would not be a bad thing; the KDE project really needs to focus on stability and performance. The question still lingers: exactly how important is KDE 4?
