The US government gave up control over ICANN

Interpreted in nationalistic terms, this change would appear to be ipso facto good for the world outside the US. However, the question that really matters about ICANN is not which country nominally controls it, but how it deals with the rights of internet users; specifically, whether it bows down to companies that wish to use ICANN to extend their control over names they use beyond what trademark law allows.
