SSH Port Forwarding

http://www.redhatmagazine.com

SSH (Secure SHell) is well known to Linux administrators as the de facto method for connecting to other systems. SSH long ago supplanted other connection methods because it strongly encrypts the connection between the hosts, ensuring that passwords and any transmitted data are safe from prying eyes.

Open source values: transparency

http://blogs.zdnet.com

Values are important, in a business sense. When your values and those of your customers are in sync, you have a great opportunity for growth. They’re also important politically. They define the boundaries for internal debate, and establish markers for debate with opponents. Transparency may be the most important open source value. Transparency is inherent in every release of open source code.

Another Day Another Distro - Part 6 - Slackware 12

http://adventuresinopensource.blogspot.com

After my positive experience of Debian it was time to move on and this time I chose Slackware 12 to try out. I didn't know anything about Slackware going into it and I certainly didn't know what I was getting myself into, "fools rush in" as they say. I certainly did. Slackware was an effort to say the least, I spent a couple of days with it. So, here's what happened on my Slackware adventure...

How Much Open Source Are You Using?

http://www.internetnews.com

Open source software might make it simpler for employees to download and install an application without first having to check that it meets with the company's approval and governance policy. But that freedom also means that application usage in the enterprise can become something of an untamed, unregulated Wild West.

Anybody up to writing good directory software?

Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David Jonathan

From the very start, directories have served a very useful purpose on the Internet. (One I find useful for example is Free Web Directory). News sites can also be considered directories: they index and categorize news stories! What about categorizing software? In the open source world you get Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat; there are still, believe it or not, shareware and freeware directories like FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and Freeware Downloads (although you need to be careful, as they are not like their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).

Is better education the key to finding better software?

Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward Russel

About Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software?, it's clear that the topic of software directories is very hot. Most of what you find on Google, however, are not pointing to free and open soruce software -- or worse, they mix the two. Examples of such sites are Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download, which simply don't focus on "free as in freedom", and still can be used as good free software directories.
