Slowly Making Friends With The New Gimp

http://penguinpetes.com

What's driving me to put Gimp 2.4 on my Slackware box (my main office) is that I can never again do a Gimp tutorial until I am set up with 2.4. The interface overhaul is just too massive; every Gimp tutorial currently published in print or the web has now become worthless.

Fedora/Linux for Noobs

http://blog.coffeedaze.com

When I first decided to do a Linux review I was going to approach it as I would view the experience. After thinking of my level of computer knowledge and some consideration I realized that it would be yet another tech review that was somewhat preaching to the choir. I wanted to be able to write this from the perspective of the majority of users out there.

A tale of four distributions

http://blogbeebe.blogspot.com

With the final release of Fedora 8 last Thursday, I decided to perform a simple experiment with four distributions. I'd boot them on my two Gateway notebooks. I didn't want to try anything fancy or complicated. I just wanted to see if they'd boot up to their default graphical desktop.

KOffice in educational settings.

http://labs.trolltech.com

Education is what I believe is a basic human right that all people should be able to get. At a fairly early age I loved playing on the computer. At school we had a computer that we connected to a set of lamps and sending a byte to the parallel port made the lights turn on/off based on the bits that are set or unset.

Perception of Free/Libre Software

http://maffulli.net

"...In my recent public speeches I focused on one value of Free Software: business ethics within digital society. In short, my argument is that since the society has changed to an economy of information, those that write software have the power to control information and therefore control society. Modern societies evolved systems, like democracy, so that big powers could be balanced.

Too many free operating systems? I don't think so.

http://www.nuxified.org

Some people say that there are too many GNU/Linux distributions, too many people just doing their own instead of joining an existing effort. In essence their criticism is towards the fact that so many people in the Free Software community actually take their freedom and pursue their dreams instead of finding their place in somebody else's vision.

Can we afford not to give our kids Linux?

http://www.itwire.com

For any parent, myself included, setting your kids loose on the net is a daunting prospect. We have to do it because the net is a fact of life - it's in our schools, the workplace, public libraries and in many if not most homes of the developed world. Therefore, do we really have any option but to give them Linux?

Windows Is The Wrong System For the Security-Unconscious

http://blue-gnu.biz

It's one thing to make a computer easy to use, but if you're going to do so, you must also make it secure. If you're not going to develop a secure OS, then at least give more thought to your emphasis on "Ease of Use".

Anybody up to writing good directory software?

Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David Jonathan

From the very start, directories have served a very useful purpose on the Internet. (One I find useful for example is Free Web Directory). News sites can also be considered directories: they index and categorize news stories! What about categorizing software? In the open source world you get Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat; there are still, believe it or not, shareware and freeware directories like FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and Freeware Downloads (although you need to be careful, as they are not like their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).

Is better education the key to finding better software?

Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward Russel

About Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software?, it's clear that the topic of software directories is very hot. Most of what you find on Google, however, are not pointing to free and open soruce software -- or worse, they mix the two. Examples of such sites are Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download, which simply don't focus on "free as in freedom", and still can be used as good free software directories.
