Now that I’ve replaced my MacBook with a lean, mean, Linux netbook machine the next step in my open-source assimilation is to install some kind of Linux on my two year-old Mac Pro.

htop - Undoubtedly the most famous of the top-like tools. It implements some extra options to the "top" command, like colors, ability to scroll horizontally and vertically, and a better interaction with the processes listed.

nethogs - network information, but instead of displaying the traffic by protocol, nethogs shows the bandwidth usage by process. Very interesting.

Tony Mobily published an article in Free Software Magazine discussing software installation, specifically end-user software installation, on Linux, which he calls broken. I agree that the system is flawed, but it is not broken. The most important thing is that we not reinvent everything around the fragmented models that OS X and Windows use.

The ext4 filesystem has been around for a while as experimental code in GNU/Linux distributions. Recently one distribution decided to make it the default for an install.

A stealth firewall provides a way to gain access to filtering Internet traffic from a position of stealth.
