The Perils in the Name of Ubuntu

http://dannybuntu.blogspot.com

The problem in naming your operating system after an abstract concept is the diversity of interpretation that the word represents. This problem is essentially highlighted in online search. Doing a search for "the meaning of Ubuntu" leads you to numerous varying results, sometimes inclined to politics and sometimes inclined to racial concepts.

Is open source losing its soul?

http://news.cnet.com

Has open source come to include so much that it's somewhat meaningless? If so, should we return to the free-software roots that defined its infancy?

Install it forward

http://practicalswitchtoubuntu.blogspot.com

I am reminded by the movie "Pay it forward" where a person started doing good to three other persons and the way of gratitude is to pay it forward, doing good to three other persons thus multiplying the goodness around.

Why Choose "Open Source" for Free Software

http://pinstack.blogspot.com

At this point, the only reason i still use the term "Free Software" is to align myself with the Free Software movement as opposed to the Open Source movement, but to end this stupid naming controversy and make both movements stronger, not only do we have to, but we should for our own benefit use the term "open source" instead. I did a little rant about this a while ago on YouTube.

You Don’t Win By Being The Same

http://www.linuxloop.com

You don't win by being the same; you win by being better - often many times better. Particularly when the competitor is well established, you have to be far better to win, so even if users are more comfortable with a desktop that looks just like Windows, Linux still has to keep innovating.

GNU/Linux: What Does “Free” Mean?

http://blog.eracc.com

I have been pondering the meaning of “free” in association with Free Open Source Software (FOSS) in general and GNU/Linux in particular. If one asks a FOSS advocate what free means in regard to these one might hear the reply, “Free as in beer!” and/or “Free as in freedom!”.

Blogging Platforms Need Open Standards Too!

http://acurrie.wordpress.com

For reasons I won’t go into here, I want to move my previous blog off of my domain and import it into either Blogger or Vox — neither of which I’m really using at the moment. But getting my almost 600 posts out of ExpressionEngine is needlessly difficult, and doesn’t seem to work. Even if I could manage to do it the resulting data is still only readable by Movable Type.

What Open Source shares with Science

I had a lengthy discussion with a new acquaintance the other day, and as it so often does in conversations I'm involved in, topics eventually shifted to the philosophy of knowledge and ideas, and their impact on the improvements within human societies over time.

Are we mis-selling 'open source'?

http://www.computerworlduk.com

I am currently re-reading an oldish book on post-Piagetian child brain development. It has proved to be a real thought provoker, ironically for me not so much about young children but about the way adults think when you get the communication wrong. Hence the title of the article.
