http://www.linuxhaxor.net

Yesterday, lead maintainer of one of my favorite Linux distribution, Linux Mint, made a blog post on the official Linux Mint blog asking people from Israel and sympathizers of their cause to not only stop giving donation to Linux Mint but also to stop using Linux Mint altogether.

True believers: The biggest cults in tech

http://www.infoworld.com

Spend enough time around technology and it starts to get under your skin. It became a part of you. You began to identify with it, even develop a belief system around it. You may have attended regular meetings of others similarly afflicted, and openly despised members of other groups. Before you were even aware of it, you'd joined a cult.

Linux is not about what you see on the screen

http://it.toolbox.com

It seems to me to be a common theme of comparing Linux and open source against the big bad proprietary companies. Linux is not about what you see on the screen. It is more a way of thinking.

The Open Source Philosophy

http://www.raccoonfink.com

There has been a lot of discussion recently on the Open Source Definition, and the use (and abuse) of the term "Open Source." One of the things that has been missing from this discussion is a higher-level overview of where the friction between "open source" and so-called "fauxpen source" comes from: intent.

Free vs Open Source software

http://nocturn.vsbnet.be

I attended ProFOSS yesterday, an Event in Brussels. It was very interesting for the most part, but I saw to common mistakes. People tend to intermix concepts, in this case Free and Open Source software used as synonyms. They are not and confusing the two clouds any thought you have on the license usage behind them.

Open Source v traditional Software (ding, ding, ding)

http://chrisscott.org

At the tail end of last month I spent two days attending talks at the yearly Internet World exhibition. I always enjoy listening to speakers and the quality was, by and large, very good. On the final day CMS Watch (@cmswatch) hosted a panel discussion in the Content Management theatre entitled: “Open Source v Traditional Software”.

Opinion: Ask Not What GNU/Linux Can Do for You

http://www.wi-fiplanet.com

"Thanks to Canonical and its success with popularizing Ubuntu Linux, there has been an astonishing influx of new GNU/Linux users. This is one of those good news -- bad news scenarios; the growth is wonderful, but it also brings a growth in user demands, and a carryover of bad habits from the proprietary software world.

Astronomical Software Wants To Be Free: Free Software is one answer to a world built in code

http://arxiv.org

Lawrence Lessig: « These questions have been the challenge of Stallman's life.Through his works and his words, he has pushed us to see the importance of keeping code “free.” Not free in the sense that code writers don't get paid, but free in the sense that the control coders build be transparent to all, and tha
