A friend of mine who regularly comments on my blog, often stirring the pot with statements to make us think about what we are writing about, mentioned to me in an email about what the consequences would be if microsoft were to go Open Source.

One For All and All For One: A Single Linux Distribution
The only problem I see with it is, which one are you gonna choose for THE distribution? Will it be SUSE, Debian, Red Hat, Gentoo, or Slackware? Since it has to be a top-level distribution and not a derivative, it will have to be one of those. Let's examine those choices.

Why distributions shouldn’t ship development versions
At Desktop Summit Lubos asked me what openSUSE has to do that I will switch back to SUSE. I replied that I am satisfied with Kubuntu and so I don’t see any need to switch the distribution. So what has changed since July?

Linux Is Bloated. Does Anyone Care?
As Linux grows up, it gains new features — and that's driven by what Linux users want. It's a bit like all those muffin-topped shoppers: They inevitably get fat, because they want fattening food.

Mark Shuttleworth's Community Has No Women
But it has a number of fatal flaws. Mr. Shuttleworth didn't make just a couple of careless comments; the recurring theme all through his talk was "Guys are the cool techies, girls are not." He drew a clear line between 'us' and 'them', with 'us' being men and 'them' being women.

Rename GIMP
With the up coming release of GIMP 3.0, I think that GIMP should be renamed to simply “Wilber.” Though it would no longer be an acronym for “GNU Image Manipulation Program”, but it would totally eliminate any possibly offensive terminology in exchange for a name everyone can love, especially the young, and it would give GIMP a chance at the big times.

Why Mark Shuttleworth Owes FOSS-Women an Apology
For the past few days, I've been reading several blog reactions (like here, here, here, and most recently here) against Mark Shuttleworth's controversial comments made from his keynote speech at LinuxCon, which turned into a huge sexism issue.

Stallman apologises for Mac OS X backdoor claims
In a posting on his FSF blog, Richard Stallman has apologised for "repeating a criticism of Mac OS which I cannot substantiate and must presume is false". The claim, that Mac OS X has a backdoor which could install changes without the user's permission, is one that Stallman has repeated, but he now says there "is no basis to claim there is one".

Changing The Conversation
I am tired of seemingly only ever reading about the topic of women in Open Source within the context of a conflict scenario... I am more interested in talking about the awesome, positive and inspiring stories of women in Open Source...

Why Open Source is not Magic Pixie Dust, Part 284
One of the pivotal moments in the rise of free software was 22 January 1998, when the following statement appeared: "Netscape Communications Corporation today announced bold plans to make the source code for the next generation of its highly popular Netscape Communicator client software available for free licensing on the Internet..."...

Ubuntu: Something for Everyone
For the Linux newbie, Ubuntu is the oft recommended distro, for a few different reasons. It's easy to set up, works on a lot of hardware, and doesn't require a manual to understand how to manage it. For the same reason, Ubuntu seems to get a bad rap from more experienced Linux users. I say there's no need of it, and I'm about to explain why.
