Salix OS 13.0.2a: Not gnarled or creepy at all
Today's menu consists of Salix OS, which like many of the rants I do these days came from an email suggestion. It's based on Slackware and attempts to extend it while remaining fully backwards-compatible. This is a formula that's worked well for distributions like Mepis and Linux Mint, so I see no reason why it can't work for Salix OS.

Cygwin is kinda broken with current wine, so we've rewound back to an old version, but you have to copy and paste a URL from winetricks' output into the mirror selector to use it. Sigh.

Mary, the daughter of a friend is in college: her Windows XP laptop constantly reboots and, we suspect, has a bad hard drive. The system will boot a live CD (Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala Desktop), and data on the hard drive can be read. During boot, the live CD identifies disk errors and tries unsuccessfully to repair them.

Life with Linux: Adding a Mac-like dock
One of the nice things about using a Mac is the dock, the area on the bottom of the screen that contains the Finder (file and directory lister) and other applications you use. By default, Ubuntu, Fedora, and other Gnome-based user interfaces do not come with a dock, but it is easy to add.
