When someone searches for OpenOffice, Firefox, VLC or any other popular open source package on the internet, are they necessarily going to get the genuine article?

Proprietary competitors, too
It's not difficult to imagine Ballmer smirking and saying;
"Well.....if you'd have been prepared to pay for a proper M$-Office license you wouldn't have all this trouble. M$-Office is designed to work with other M$ products while this FOSS stuff is only for hobbyists."
Most proprietary companies would positively welcome buggy, insecure copies of Free Software giving FOSS a bad name.
