Red Hat’s, Brian Stevens, claims that the desktop is dead. This may seem a trifle premature, but from my own perspective, that has already been the case for several years.

The desktop is not going to disappear suddenly because there is a movement to include mobile devices. On the contrary, I see years in which a business will adopt a multitude of new devices, and the infrastructure needed to make them all work coherently.

This question has been asked many times before in many different settings. It’s the mantra of Windows desktop devotees: “Linux is fine in the server room, but…”

Today I decided to move my desktop to jaunty. It's still an alpha but I'm not afraid of having to face a non-working Xorg once in a while and having to use the VTs instead. Given the speed improvements I've read about... the time is now... there's just a tiny little problem. I have no room left to do the dist-upgrade:

One of the problems we were running into in our home was the distribution of media files, specifically music... I want my music in places other than the room my desktop is in, other than the apartment my computer is in, and I don't have an mp3 player large enough for all of my files.
