What is Open Source?

http://blogs.zdnet.com

The egalitarianism of Richard Stallman, the practicality of Eric Raymond, the engineering values of Linus Torvalds. So, too, the stories of Vint Cerf, of Tim Berners-Lee, and of early peering arrangements, in which moving money became secondary to moving bits.

Corporate Resistance to the Adoption of Linux and Open Source Applications

http://thefrugalnetworker.wordpress.com

So just what is it about Linux and Open Source that company owners and executives don’t like?

Don't look to Linus Torvalds for leadership

http://www.linuxworld.com

Linus Torvalds seems to be trying very hard to make the latest Linux kernel update as boring as possible. Reading this release announcement, if we can even call it that, you'd never imagine that Torvalds was leading the evolution of software.

Fear and loathing at the command line

http://brucebyfield.wordpress.com

Long ago, I lost any queasiness about the command line. I’m not one of those who think it’s the only way to interact with their computers, but it’s a rare day that I don’t use it three or four times on my GNU/Linux system.

Why Ballmer's Protection FUD Matters

http://www.eweek.com

Every time Ballmer makes these increasingly vague claims—this makes the fourth go-around in the last four years by my count—open source and legal experts jump all over him. He ignores them and life continues. Ballmer is sending two other hidden messages though. Mark Shuttleworth, CEO of Canonical, Ubuntu's corporate Linux backer, pointed them out to me in a recent conversation.

Microsoft is dead - even if they don’t know it yet

http://wolfgang.lonien.de

Watch out, parents - close the windows, and protect your kids. Ballmer is on the move again, this time to put the final nail into his own coffin.

Finding freedom with open source

http://media.www.dailytarheel.com

Cristobal Palmer got very agitated when those "cannot read file" boxes popped up on his computer - until he found out they could make him thousands of dollars. The all-too-familiar messages helped spark Palmer's interest in open-source software, programs that are written to be shared with and modified by others.

Steve Ballmer: "I would love to see all open source innovation happen on top of Windows"

http://blogs.cnet.com

Steve Ballmer apparently likes open source. Well, so long as it drives Windows revenue. And doesn't replace any. Ever. In fact, as he said at an event in Microsoft last week in London that he hopes to see all open-source innovation going to Windows, rather than Linux (more below).

The Future of Hardware is Open Source

http://www.raiden.net

What if we lived in a world where all hardware was open source, including CPU’s, memory, motherboards, and all peripherals? Would it be a better world, or would it be a rolling nightmare, plagued with problems, and rampant with show stopping bugs that would bring the world to a grinding halt? I honestly think the fore more than the latter.

Cracks in the Foundation

http://www.robweir.com

You must admire their tenacity. Gary Edwards and the pseudonymous "Marbux". The mythology of Silicon Valley is filled with stories of two guys and a garage founding great enterprises. And here we have two guys, and through blogs, interviews, and constant attendance at conferences, they have become some of the most-heard voices on ODF. Maybe it is partly due to the power of the name?

Locating Linux-loyal Laptops

http://www.itwire.com

A look through most department store catalogues reveals a bevy of alleged “deal” laptops; you know the type – cheap and cheerful, sub-$1,000 – but far from bleeding-edge specs. These may be naff at resource-hungry Windows apps but can be a great Linux machine for no extra cost.

Why Analysts Like Gartenberg, Mossberg, Enderle Don't Get Linux on the Desktop

http://www.ehomeupgrade.com

I follow all three of the above mentioned analysts regularly as part of my news scouring for eHomeUpgrade. Unfortunately, I believe all three of them GET IT WRONG when it comes to Linux users and what THEY WANT from their PCs.

The Penguin Grows Horns: Installing FreeBSD

http://penguinpetes.com

It has always bothered me that this site and my experiences stay inside of Linux so much, when the whole site is about "free and open source software". I've only dabbled in non-Linux FOSS with live CDs and such, but I'm ready to install a real BSD and stick with it for awhile. So, the recently-acquired box with Windows-XP will now be sharing space with a daemon.

Microsoft's pseudo-open source: open trap for open-source developers?

http://blogs.cnet.com

If you believe some of the headlines, Microsoft just open sourced a bunch of software related to its .Net libraries. Don't be fooled. The definition of open source is very clear. This is not open source. Not even a little bit. In fact, this may actually be an insidious trap (more on that below).

Ubuntu, security & freedom. Can they still live together?

http://www.aspir8or.com

There is a long and somewhat heated argument taking place in the Ubuntu forums over a post by Ian Jackson in the Ubuntu Developers mail list, which is a wrapup of a discussion held on the irc #ubuntu-devel channel. The post advocates a change in the Ubuntu security policy by making it more difficult for new users to install untrusted 3rd party software.
