The Absent PCLinuxOS Release Cycle

http://linux-blog.org

During distro comparisons, many call a lack of release cycle for PCLinuxOS one of its negative aspects. In my opinion, this is the most attractive and positive aspects of the small distribution. Not to take away from a distribution that sets a release cycle...I understand that normal release cycles are a must with companies and software engineering.

The real reasons why Linux is “behind” Windows on the desktop

http://hackfud.net

There are a number of reasons why Linux doesn’t have the desktop penetration which Windows currently enjoys. But let’s start with the main, number one reason...Microsoft.

Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon: Critical review

http://polishlinux.org

Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon has been released today. I haven’t tested any alpha or beta versions of the new product from Canonical. I have decided to wait for the Release Candidate, since this has proved to work for me in the past. In short: it did not disappoint me. The new Ubuntu is more polished, more professional and in general, better than the previous one, which was already a great OS.

Collaboration: Best Reason for Government Open Source?

http://www.linuxtoday.com

There seems to be a disconnect between what users want for their computing needs, and what vendors think they want. A glaring example of this was made apparent to me at the Government Open Source Conference (GOSCON) earlier this week.

Why don’t more people use Debian?

http://tuxtoday.wordpress.com

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve caught myself wondering why there are so many “easy-to-use” Debian-based distros. I used to think of Debian as the distro that was way up there, a long long way to go, in terms of user-friendlyness. I didn’t think that I was going to be able to use Debian. It just seemed to hard.

Linux Will Be Worth $1 Billion In First 100 Days of 2009

http://www.informationweek.com

What's Linux worth? The question has been a favorite of technology groups and cocktail party conversations ever since a character named Jeff V. Merkey offered $50,000 for a copy of Linux. The offer was a ploy. Merkey wanted it under the BSD license, which would have undermined the terms of the GPL. So he didn't get it. But we know, at least, that $50,000 proved to be a low bid.

The unspoken truth of operating systems

http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com

All of these [articles I've been reading lately] ignore one thing which is almost never stated: for a large majority of everyday computer users, people for whom a computer is just another tool or piece of technology, like a refrigerator or a widescreen TV, Windows is just fine.

Wikipedia Vs Software

http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com

So I, along with everyone else today, got forwarded this link which shows that Wikipedia has begun its journey from an edit-focused hive of activity, to read-only archive, as people stop editing the site. As one of the larger “open” projects, it can point to possibilities in the future for other projects. It also mirrors smaller projects, and the history we discovered years ago.

Letters: We're Quite Ready for Linux on Desktop

http://www.computerworld.com

I am neither a Linux vendor nor a programmer. I am, however, a Linux end user. As such, I can attest to the error in some of Michael Gartenberg’s comments [“Linux Still Doesn’t Make It on Desktop,” Opinion, Oct. 1].

Those who can compete, do. Those who can't, sue

http://blogs.cnet.com

I'm a wee bit tired by patent FUD and other substitutes for real competition from Microsoft. Microsoft has built a great business on comparatively good products. Yet in its old age, it seems incapable of competing on customer value and instead keeps fetishing its patent portfolio, as if anyone but its lawyers care about those.

Linux patent lawsuit: follow the money

http://blogs.cnet.com

Why sue two companies with [relatively] nonexistent desktop businesses when Microsoft provides the biggest potential jackpot of all? (After all, this same company sued and settled with Apple earlier this year.) Unless, of course, it is Microsoft funding the whole thing?
