Linux on the line: musings on the CLI / GUI flip-flop

http://www.itwire.com

People are a funny lot. One person’s trash is another person’s treasure. And one person’s primary means of instructing a computer is met with disdain by another. There’s a perennial battle between mousers and keyboard jockeys, and “what’s in” appears to go in cycles.

So how does a non-gamer organize a gaming festival?

http://www.nuxified.org

I am constantly a bit worried that people will detect the fact that this Freedomware Gamefest 2007 event is actually being organized by someone who is not really a gamer and who only has brief experience with online multiplayer gaming, and that this will discourage participation and view this event as a sort of "vaporware".

Big Picture Stuff

http://www.linuxtoday.com

There have been a couple of thought-provoking columns that have been published recently that I wanted to add my own two cents. Not that the authors of these missives were completely wrong in their conclusions, But I think some added perspective is needed to highlight that their points, while having some validity, still fall short of where Linux is right now and how it's going to move forward.

It's Time to Get Over Microsoft

http://itmanagement.earthweb.com

Free and open source software (FOSS) advocates need to stop obsessing about Microsoft. But, just as clearly, many of them won't, if the reactions I received when I blogged about the subject are any indication.

Bill Hilf’s interview with InformationWeek explained

http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com

I recently read an interview with Bill Hilf [1] (thanks to a link from Groklaw). As I read it, I realised that it needed clarifications to anybody left wondering whether Mr. Hilf’s answers are indeed objective. This article will go through the most interesting questions and answers, and will try to clarify some important points

Desktop, schmesktop meets Android

http://trevors-trinkets.blogspot.com

[The desktop] has served us well, and old-timers like me will remember it with fond affection for many years to come, but we will have our work cut out trying to explain to the next generation why anyone would bother to go to a clunky box on a desk in a particular room room whenever they needed computer power.

Will the biggest clouds stay open source?

http://blogs.zdnet.com

All we know right now is that 2008 will be the “year of the cloud” and that right now Linux has a good chance of powering more of those clouds than anyone else.

OLPC News 100 Laptop XO Fundraising Drive

http://www.olpcnews.com

I believe that if you pick up some of the most pressing world problems, like poverty, corruption, tyranny, most solutions will need some of the same basic needs: easy and free access to communication, information, collaboration, education and by giving power to anyone to record present facts, remember their history and broadcast their own voice.

Mesh networks on OLPC: it's all about the application level

http://www.oreillynet.com

One Laptop Per Child system has limited value on its own. Its most innovative and powerful features lie in its participation in a mesh network with other laptops. So get your neighbors and workmates to buy them too!

There's always hope...

http://www.tuxmachines.org

[A while ago] I talked about how the CEO of Mandriva seemed a little unprofessional in his open letter about suspicion that MS paid a Nigerian company (called TSC) in charge of the Classmate PC deployment/training to dump Linux in favour of Linux after the deal. What I should have also add was that one should be patient and have a little faith in your fellow man.

Too many free operating systems? I don't think so.

http://www.nuxified.org

Some people say that there are too many GNU/Linux distributions, too many people just doing their own instead of joining an existing effort. In essence their criticism is towards the fact that so many people in the Free Software community actually take their freedom and pursue their dreams instead of finding their place in somebody else's vision.

Is it Microsoft + Novell or Microsoft vs. Novell?

http://blogs.cnet.com

Mary Jo Foley notes some of the highlights of Microsoft's patent/interoperability deal with Novell, following Microsoft's own press release celebrating the deal. She says something, however, that I'm not sure I agree with

Lessons from Africa: How to Kill Your Own FUD

http://www.linuxtoday.com

In a world where the big conglomerates and industries tend to roll over the little guy, it was really nice to see the government of Nigeria put the kibosh on Microsoft's planned takeover of the Mandriva/Classmate PC deal in that country.

100th Post: A Call for the Senate to Pass Patent Reform

http://trolltracker.blogspot.com

If you're getting sued for patent infringement, you have a right to know who is really behind the lawsuit, and so does the public. So I started digging up publicly available information. What I found amazed me - so many patent plaintiffs, especially in the Eastern District of Texas, make no products, and just try to extract money out of their IP.

Microsoft and "Interoperability"...LOL! That's a good one!

http://www.tuxmachines.org

MS has been doing their usual patent FUD, while Novell is sprouting how wonderful interoperability is. Same agreement, two different views. Now that's odd. Typically, you'd expect all parties involved in an agreement to be singing the same tune. So what's going on here? Well, someone points out the obvious.
