"After “I’m a PC.” and “I’m a Mac.” there will be the revolution of the Operating Systems: The GNU/Linux one. :) The thing is that we aren’t a Linux, but we are Linux. (GNU/Linux people will understand this sentence..."

Is your toilet economically sustainable?

http://humanist.roua.org

"...Today, your government is sponsoring Adobe and Microsoft through the licensing mechanism (by “generously” installing on the public offices’ desks Microsoft+Adobe, rather than Ubuntu), but it should, instead, sponsor the GNU, Debian and FreeBSD projects. These projects form the infrastructure of practical democracy, they embody the free speech in its most accurate form.

The Wrong Way To Sell Linux

http://blog.linuxtoday.com

It seems that anymore all we hear about Linux and FOSS is it's free of cost, and that desktop Linux is just as good as Windows because it's all pointy-clicky and you don't have to touch the nasty command line which is frightening and must be avoided, and "just like Mac and Windows" you don't have to learn a thing because it's all magic.

A Weekend with Eben Moglen

http://sreejithsblog.blogspot.com

"On the last weekend, I got a chance to interact with two eminent personalities who compete with each other in leaving their legacy in the minds of people whom they meet. While RMS is admired by thousands of people around the world including me for creating the Free Software Movement and for his uncompromising stand, Eben Moglen leaves his mark for his oratory skills, humbleness and humility.

What happened to Free and Open Knowledge?

http://trombonechamp.wordpress.com

Recently in US History class we have been studying The Gilded Age. Andrew Carnegie, John Rockefeller, and other businessmen ruled the US with such power that it made the government useless. When the government could do something about the problem with the cases that came through Supreme Court, it almost always sided with the corporations.

A balance of freedoms

http://www.fsdaily.com

We balance freedoms (sacrifice one freedom for another) everyday. We sacrifice the freedom to do whatever we want to live in a society where laws keep us safe. And we'd rather be safe than do the things that are illegal (well most of us anyway). So we sacrifice a freedom we wouldn't exercise (to commit crimes) for ones we do want to exercise (to live without being the victim of crime).

Affero GPL is freedom to the web

http://maffulli.net

"...copyleft is a tool designed to spread freedom in software, at any cost. The FSF, which wrote the GNU and Affero licenses, has the goal to make all software free as in freedom. Companies are ‘free’ to join the revolution, or to look somewhere else for their needs.

The Free Software Movement: an answer to a world built in code and/or a philosophy in itself ?

http://www.deccanherald.com

"...«Piracy,» Stallman said during his public speech in Bangalore on Saturday, «is totally wrong, because it is wrong to attack ships on sail.» If the person posing the question happens to get smarter and asks specifically about software and music piracy, Stallman gave an even better answer: «Pirates never attack ships with software and music, they do it with guns.» ..." --

Social Contracts, Social Justice, and the Creative Commons

http://coffs.free.net.au

For some time now, I've found the Creative Commons philosophy morally troubling in a way that the free software philosophy isn't, without being able to satisfactorily articulate precisely why.

Report from the free software movement in Kerala

http://blog.p2pfoundation.net

"Three days ago, I spend a much too short time at a Free Software, Free Society conference in Kerala, which was quite an enthusiastic gathering. Equally present was Stefan Merten of Project Oekonux, who has published a report in Keimform, which I’m partially reproducing below. (see also added comments by co-organizer V. Sasi Kumar) ..."
