Mode-Aware Google Help in Emacs
"While surfing the other night, I ran across a nice Emacs Lisp function for using Google to do context-sensitive help from inside Emacs.I liked how simple it was, and had always been curious about writing some Emacs lisp code (my .emacs file is a random collection of snippets I egregiously pilfered from various locations), so I thought I would enhance the solution by making it aware of what major-

CLI Magic: For geek cred, try these one-liners
In this context, a one-liner is a set of commands normally joined through a pipe (|). When joined by a pipe, the command on the left passes its output to the command on the right. Simple or complex, you can get useful results from a single line at the bash command prompt.

Macedonia and Ubuntu
I am pretty proud of my adopted country, Macedonia. (Full disclosure - my wife is Macedonian.) At the end of 2005 Macedonia became the world’s first wireless country. The full BBC write-up is here. Two years later, in 2007, Macedonia became one of the few countries to roll out, en masse, Ubuntu throughout the educational system.

Why do GNOME people always play the man?
Software engineers are often touted as people whose logic is excellent. That's why I'm amazed when some of these so-called virtuosos always indulge in personal attacks when they spot something with which they disagree.

But how well do their arguments stack up?

Anybody up to writing good directory software?
Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David JonathanFrom the very start, directories have served a very useful purpose on the Internet. (One I find useful for example is Free Web Directory). News sites can also be considered directories: they index and categorize news stories! What about categorizing software? In the open source world you get Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat; there are still, believe it or not, shareware and freeware directories like FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and Freeware Downloads (although you need to be careful, as they are not like their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).

Most of what you find on Google, however, are not pointing to free and open soruce software -- or worse, they mix the two. Examples of such sites are Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download, which simply don't focus on "free as in freedom", and still can be used as good free software directories.
