A Single Command to Get Started on Functional Programming
"Functional Programming is old. Ancient. Like right after FORTRAN. But it’s the future. Trust me, I’m named after the dude who knew about Jesus 700 years early. Seriously, it’s not going to take 700 years for FP to go mainstream. Some would argue that it already is. Python, Ruby, and others have adopted a number of FP features.

Interview: Vernor Vinge
"Science fiction writer Vernor Vinge is best-known for novels like A Fire Upon the Deep and Rainbows End, as well as the concept of The Singularity -- the idea that, in the next couple of decades, humans will become or create a super-human intelligence. What is less well-known is that Vinge has been a free software supporter since the earliest days of the Free Software Foundation (FSF).

Open source isn't free software
There's a long standing argument over the differences between "open-source" software and "free" software. But, a more common error outside of software ideology circles is that you can use open-source software anyway you please. Nope. Wrong. It's never been that way.

What happened to Free and Open Knowledge?
Recently in US History class we have been studying The Gilded Age. Andrew Carnegie, John Rockefeller, and other businessmen ruled the US with such power that it made the government useless. When the government could do something about the problem with the cases that came through Supreme Court, it almost always sided with the corporations.

Open source programming languages for kids
The past couple of years have seen an explosion of open source programming languages and utilities that are geared toward children. Many of these efforts are based around the idea that, since the days of BASIC, programming environments have become far too complex for untrained minds to wrap themselves around.

Today the Amarok project releases Narwhal, the release candidate of the upcoming Amarok 2.0.
The changes since Beta 3 focus mostly on fixing bugs, as we are in a fairly hard feature-freeze to give us time to polish the final product. However, this didn’t stop us from adding a few nice new things.
And remember, the new Amarok 2.0 RC 1 works on Windows and MacOS too.

Anybody up to writing good directory software?
Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David JonathanFrom the very start, directories have served a very useful purpose on the Internet. (One I find useful for example is Free Web Directory). News sites can also be considered directories: they index and categorize news stories! What about categorizing software? In the open source world you get Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat; there are still, believe it or not, shareware and freeware directories like FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and Freeware Downloads (although you need to be careful, as they are not like their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).

Examples of such sites are Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download, which simply don't focus on "free as in freedom", and still can be used as good free software directories.
