Thoughts on creating a successful Linux distro

http://blog.andrewmin.com

I came a cross a really interesting article today. Basically, the author’s points boil down to the idea that you need to be cutting edge (old school Mandrake), n00b friendly (easy to use and ultra-stable) , or appeal to a niche (old hardware, graphics users, etc) in order to create a successful Linux distribution.

A Linux Literary Trilogy

http://var-blog-messages.blogspot.com

When I started delving into the world of Linux development, I was not only befuddled by the strange code layout and conventions, I also found the culture and ethos of Linux very confusing. There were three books that were invaluable in pulling my understanding out of this quagmire

The Wrong Way To Sell Linux

http://blog.linuxtoday.com

It seems that anymore all we hear about Linux and FOSS is it's free of cost, and that desktop Linux is just as good as Windows because it's all pointy-clicky and you don't have to touch the nasty command line which is frightening and must be avoided, and "just like Mac and Windows" you don't have to learn a thing because it's all magic.

A Weekend with Eben Moglen

"On the last weekend, I got a chance to interact with two eminent personalities who compete with each other in leaving their legacy in the minds of people whom they meet. Anybody up to writing good directory software?

Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David Jonathan

From the very start, directories have served a very useful purpose on the Internet. (One I find useful for example is Free Web Directory). News sites can also be considered directories: they index and categorize news stories! What about categorizing software? In the open source world you get Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat; there are still, believe it or not, shareware and freeware directories like FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and Freeware Downloads (although you need to be careful, as they are not like their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).

Is better education the key to finding better software?

Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward Russel

About Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software?, it's clear that the topic of software directories is very hot. Most of what you find on Google, however, are not pointing to free and open soruce software -- or worse, they mix the two. Examples of such sites are Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download, which simply don't focus on "free as in freedom", and still can be used as good free software directories.
