Linux and the Drummer
So when a friend who is a drummer for a band called "The Long Gone Daddys" asked me to fix his computer I asked what do you use it for? Answer to check the MySpace and web site for the band mostly. He also needed better tools for the web site management as well. He knew I used Linux so I asked if he wanted to give it a try. He answered that he wanted to have a working computer that stayed working.

GPL's cloudy future
One of the things about getting older is that you learn to ignore things until you have to do something about them. It’s a learned efficiency, I suppose. I finally realized I have to do some serious thinking about cloud computing.

Tutorial: An Introduction to Linux CLI
A shell is a command interpreter which allows the user to interact with the computer. The way things work is simple: the user types in commands, the shell interprets them and performs the tasks it was asked to do, and finally it sends the result to the standard output (which is usually the screen). For example, the output of the ls command can be something like:

Questions About the Linux Kernel Personality (LKP) and the GPL
I've been thinking about something. And I can't figure out the answer. Remember when SCO's Erik Hughes was deposed [PDF; text] in the SCO v. IBM litigation, he said that at first the LKP did have kernel code in it, but later it was taken out? So then why, when SCO announced it was stopping distribution of Linux in May of 2003, would it have needed to stop distributing the LKP also?

Review: Debian 5: Lenny
Debian…the father and grandfather of many a Linux distro. I think indirectly Debian is probably running on more computers than any other Linux distro. It’s the basis of Ubuntu, Mepis, Xandros, and many others. And many people use Debian where they need a nice, stable distro.

Evidence Caldera Knew in 2002 - or Coulda Shoulda - That JFS in Linux Came From OS/2, not AIX
Let me sing you a song about frivolous claims. May I? Lookee here [PDF], will you? It's a PDF on Caldera's own web site, a paper titled JFS for Linux, by IBM's Steve Best, dated February 2002, as you can see by the url. It's copyrighted 2002, too.

Cherokee: Why it could own the Internet
I've typically been pretty conservative when choosing a web server. Typically, I'll use Apache to run most sites, and possibly Lighttpd for static files. Experimenting never really has been something done with a web server once I'm past the initial setup.

Anybody up to writing good directory software?
Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David JonathanFrom the very start, directories have served a very useful purpose on the Internet. (One I find useful for example is Free Web Directory). News sites can also be considered directories: they index and categorize news stories! What about categorizing software? In the open source world you get Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat; there are still, believe it or not, shareware and freeware directories like FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and Freeware Downloads (although you need to be careful, as they are not like their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).
Is better education the key to finding better software?
Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward RusselAbout Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software?, it's clear that the topic of software directories is very hot. Most of what you find on Google, however, are not pointing to free and open soruce software -- or worse, they mix the two. Examples of such sites are Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download, which simply don't focus on "free as in freedom", and still can be used as good free software directories.
