Time to name and shame the anti-open source extremists

http://blogs.zdnet.com

Since I began writing this blog in 2005 I have watched open source move from a fringe idea to something embraced by the IT mainstream. But there are still extremists out there who want to destroy open source. Some of their names may surprise you.

The Perennial Year of the Linux Desktop

http://tuxtweaks.com

It's become a tradition (and a bit of a running joke) for bloggers and tech pundits to declare that this year (whatever year you're in) will be The Year of the Linux Desktop. So in following with that tradition, I'm here to declare that 2010 will be The Year of the Linux Desktop, but not in the sense that many other bloggers have stated.

Gnome 3 Will Be Amazing

http://blogs.gnome.org

Today, we had a breakthrough; the boldest, baddest synthesis for a desktop we have ever hit upon. For a desktop redesign with a 6 hr genesis it is relatively concrete, its not handwavy, its not buzzword-y, its not taillight chasing. It is targeted at a whole mess of real pains (both little jabs and big aches you barely know are there), and it solves them in elegant, gorgeous, functional ways.

Virtual Hosting With Proftpd And MySQL (Incl. Quota) On Ubuntu 9.10

http://www.howtoforge.com

This document describes how to install a Proftpd server that uses virtual users from a MySQL database instead of real system users. This is much more performant and allows to have thousands of ftp users on a single machine. In addition to that I will show the use of quota with this setup.

When will Microsoft sue Google over Linux?

http://news.cnet.com

Microsoft once made the mistake of broad-brushing Linux as an intellectual property quagmire. It made Microsoft headlines, but few friends: lawyers didn't believe it, customers didn't want to hear it, and competitors dared it to sue.

Since the late 1990s, a handful of media and technology companies has waged war against the public, imposing digital restrictions on the technology we use. Anybody up to writing good directory software?

Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David Jonathan

From the very start, directories have served a very useful purpose on the Internet. (One I find useful for example is Free Web Directory). News sites can also be considered directories: they index and categorize news stories! What about categorizing software? In the open source world you get Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat; there are still, believe it or not, shareware and freeware directories like FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and Freeware Downloads (although you need to be careful, as they are not like their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).

Is better education the key to finding better software?

Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward Russel

About Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software?, it's clear that the topic of software directories is very hot. Most of what you find on Google, however, are not pointing to free and open soruce software -- or worse, they mix the two. Examples of such sites are Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download, which simply don't focus on "free as in freedom", and still can be used as good free software directories.
