http://blogs.computerworld.com

Back in March 1991, Stewart Alsop, venture capitalist and one time editor-in-chief of InfoWorld said, "I predict that the last mainframe will be unplugged on March 15, 1996." In 2010, while IBM doesn't break out its profits by individual server line, IBM's systems and technology group, reported 1st quarter revenue of $3.4 billion.

From the Sys Admin Toolbox: Logwatch

http://www.linux-mag.com

Last week we provided an introduction to the Linux system logs. (See Logs: Your Linux System’s Lovable Worker Bees.) Now, what will you, as a system administrator, use to watch logs? Logwatch, of course. As so many others have succinctly put it, messing with log files is a royal pain in the backside. Logwatch makes the experience of keeping track of system activity almost painless for you.

My HP 2133 Mini-Note with WSVGA (1024x600) display has been out on loan for several months. It came back a week or so ago, and as it had missed the latest wave of Linux distribution updates, I decided to reload it from scratch.

GNU/Linux: The Name Game

http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk

I have been asked several times why I do not refer to Linux as "GNU/Linux," or "the GNU/Linux operating system," or some variation thereof. Most of you are well aware of the controversy around using the term "Linux," but many people who have recently switched are likely confused.

Linux inches up on desktop, holds steady on servers

http://www.linuxfordevices.com

Linux's share of the desktop market grew to 1.13 percent, says Net Applications, making Linux the only OS to improve its position in May. Ubuntu: when Linux ideology meets business

http://www.techradar.com

Profiting from Linux doesn't involve an obvious winning formula. There are as many different business models as there are distributions, and you seldom find much overlap between those that are working. Instead, you find something more like the world of medieval patronage.

Is Ubuntu committed to free software?

http://blog.thesilentnumber.me

Of course we are! At least according to our philosophy.

Still, many people don't think that Ubuntu is truly committed to free software in practice. I raised an interesting debate which took place on the Anarchism Reddit about whether it is better to be a purist or not. It started out by talking about Facebook and moved on to Ubuntu. The purist side made a very good argument with this:

Open source could be Brazil's real advantage

http://www.computerweekly.com

Yesterday, I had an interesting lunch with Flavio Grynzpan, formerly president of Motorola in Brazil. Now a consultant who actively promotes the Brazilian IT industry internationally, Grynzpan is one of those extremely well-connected people who have their ear to the ground, so it was good to get some alternative views before hearing the government pitch.

KDE 3 vs. KDE 4: Which Linux Desktop Is Right for You?

http://itmanagement.earthweb.com

Two and a half years after the KDE 4 series of releases began, many users are still using KDE 3. A preference for the familiar seems to motivate some; while others seem influenced by the rumors that began with the botched 4.0 release. Still others want a feature that the KDE 4 series has yet to implement -- or, sometimes, a feature they have been unable to find because of reorganization.
