A Simple Lisp WebServer
"I have been impressed with the ease of Ruby's Webrick system for getting a simple webserver working. I wanted to see how complex the same would be in Lisp. The aim is to get hunchentoot installed and working, and get it serving some simple web pages. After downloading hunchentoot, I must install the package. I'm still learning to use asdf for package installation and management..."

Removing the Big Kernel Lock
"As some of the latency junkies on lkml already know, commit 8e3e076 in v2.6.26-rc2 removed the preemptible BKL feature and made the Big Kernel Lock a spinlock and thus turned it into non-preemptible code again. We have already seen street protests in a few places including Norway (photo above; here is a video and the full story). The BSI (UK) came under legal fire as well. The European Commission is dealing with several investigations as complaints continue to come (more recently from BECTA, whose formal complaint was added to the pile).

Though the tools for voice control and dictation in the open source world lag far behind those in the commercial arena, I decided to see how far I could get in querying a database by voice and having the computer respond verbally. Using a number of open source tools, I'm happy to report success.

Building a glossier front end for MythTV
Josh Stewart loves MythTV -- so much so that he is building his own front-end app for it as a drop-in replacement for MythTV's default. The PC Repair Toolkit in your Pocket: Boot CD on a USB Stick
Several times I’ve been called upon at a moment’s notice to troubleshoot a misbehaving PC system either at work or at a friend’s or relative’s home. Being the “go to” guy for these sorts of problems is both a curse and a blessing, but I guess that is besides the point. One tool that I have found to be valuable beyond compare is the Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD).

Six months with an Eee PC and Not Looking Back
It's hard to believe, but It's was exactly six months ago this week that I picked up a black ASUS Eee PC 700 laptop. At just 4GB of internal storage and a 900MHz Celeron processor, the little book-sized laptop definitely has its limitations, but I'm not looking to replace it with anything soon, except maybe a newer model of the same laptop.
