"Remote helpdesk" means you have remote control of a user's PC, and can operate it from your comfortable IT lair just as though you were sitting in front of it. So instead of trying to coach some poor user through their own PC surgery, you can take control of it and quickly figure out what's going on and set it right.

Linux Hater's Blog actually well worth reading
Whatever your feelings are about Linux (or Windows, or OS X , or ...) you really should check out the Linux Hater's Blog...It's actually farther from all-out-flaming than you'd think and basically challenges the Linux community to do better.

NASA Uses Ubuntu
Two weekends ago was the Smithsonian Folklife Festival....we walked over toward NASA's area, and I stopped to read a big sign. As I was reading the paragraphs, [my friend] walks over, looks at the photo of a woman in front of a projector, and goes "that's gnome-terminal!" Sure enough, gnome-terminal is minimized in the bottom panel. Kevin then came over and asked what we were looking at.

Ubuntu hits new high in Linux boredom
Last weekend a friend was moaning about endless problems with Windows XP on his desktop PC. We installed Ubuntu 7.04 on it. The problems went away. That started me thinking about my own "daily driver" computer, a Dell Latitude that also runs Ubuntu 7.04, and it made me realize that I hadn't thought about my laptop or its operating system in many months.

MultiTail lets you view one or multiple files like the original tail program. The difference is that it creates multiple windows on your console (with ncurses). It can also monitor wildcards: if another file matching the wildcard has a more recent modification date, it will automatically switch to that file. That way you can, for example, monitor a complete directory of files.

A biological approach to security
Over at the Open Sources blog, Savio Rodrigues calls attention to two critical security vulnerabilities in the Spring Framework for Java. Using Emacs for Rails development - The perfect setup
"Lately, I’ve started digging more and more into Rails, preparing for the start of a Rails powered project. Although there are some IDEs offering decent Rails support(namely NetBeans, Komodo and Aptana Studio) I have always preferred the comfort of Emacs for various reasons. So naturally I embarked on a quest to setup a suitable environment for Rails development in Emacs.

Ubuntu Tweak Utility Review
As a rule, I am generally leery about various user created "tweaking utilities" available for any OS, much less Linux. Not because I am afraid to trip something up that I do not fully understand, rather fully understanding what I am doing but lacking the confidence in the application itself to do what I could do from a command line or configuration file instead.

Is Selling Linux Evil?
Not too ago, I stumbled onto a post that was created by a rather irate blogger who felt that Ubuntu was getting the shaft. Apparently someone had decided to "sell" Ubuntu CDs, with packaging, on eBay. In this article, I want to seriously examine what, if any, harm was done here.

Admission and Lesson - Don't Overcomplicate Linux!
This is the kind of thing I don't particularly enjoy writing, but as I have been blogging about learning Linux, and I've tried to approach as an "ordinary PC user" would, I think it's important to pass along lessons learned from mistakes. Of course, my approach to Linux is tainted by my very long history with Unix, and perhaps that's what happened in this case...

10 Must-Have Linux Applications
I have been using Linux in one capacity or another since I first downloaded a Red Hat ISO a number of years ago. What finally allowed me to go full-time with my chosen distro was not so much the progression of hardware detection and self-mounting partitions but the applications. Today, I would like to share some of my personal favorites with you.
