I’ve been using Firefox’s fullscreen mode on my Eee PC to get the maximum amount of vertical screen space possible. I noticed that the screen flickers black briefly whenever a tooltip or right click menu is displayed. All fullscreen applications seem to be affected. This bug can be worked around by changing an advanced Compiz setting to turn off the unredirecting of fullscreen windows.

Sharing files with wdfs and FUSE
I move from computer to computer constantly -- desktops, laptops, testing machines -- and rather than worry about synchronizing the assorted hard disks content, I prefer to keep one central copy of my documents that I can access anywhere. I do that using wdfs, the WebDAV file system for FUSE.

Shantz Webcam Autolocker
ain why I did 'em. Did this one in one of those times as well. This is a simple (and useless) script to monitor motion in front of your PC, auto-lock it when you are away and auto-unlock it when you come back.

Ubuntu offers an exciting alternative for the Vista-wary
The widespread ambivalence to Vista has provided a window of opportunity for alternatives to Microsoft Windows. Reports released in early June, for instance, suggested that Linux use, while still a tiny minority, rose 18% from last year on computers accessing 40,000 websites monitored by Net Applications.

An education issue? + Yay for the Intrepid user switcher and shutdown/logoff window
...the use of free and open-source software is an education issue. What I mean by that is that if we want FOSS to be adopted in a more widespread fashion, if we want projects to succeed (and FOSS-focused companies to succeed), we need to make sure that people know that alternatives exist.

Ubuntu Has To Become Boring To Succeed
I was thinking of how we could get Ubuntu as the most used operating system. We can tell everybody the advantages of an open source OS for one reason or another this is not enough. Most computer users do not want their OS to change. They want it to be the same all the time, that is why Windows Vista is failing to capture the hearts of Windows users.

Surround sound fixing in Ubuntu
I obtained a rather small nice little machine the other day, and having never heard one of my DVDs in full surround sound, I decided to turn this box into a DVD player. I do have a DVD player, but it only has DTS output for surround sound and my speaker system has 3 jacks. So, first of all the easy bit. Modify pulse audio.

The Linux Party
The November election brings with it the promise of changes, new beginnings, and hope for those who've endured the past 8 years with less than an enthusiastic attitude. The choice of President and Vice President means far less to most of us than the people they choose for Cabinet positions.

This is my first time to try out LXDE. I am curious about it and there are certain things that I am glad are in LXDE. For one thing, Alt+F2 also pops up a run dialog box so I could type the name of the application I want to run. There are even suggestions as to what I could run when I typed the first how many letters of the application’s name.

What’s coming in Ubuntu 8.10?
There are only two months left for the new Ubuntu release to appear. I’ve decided to check out what is it that the Ubuntu developers have been preparing for us. Yet again, there are no huge, revolutionary changes, but some of them are really interesting. I’ve decided to write a few words about them.
