Most Linux users will probably admit to having a “Lock Screen” button. Why? Because it is very useful to be able to slide your pointer to the top right of your screen and click a button before stepping out of the room for a few moments.

Playing with Pendrivelinux
Always intrigued by alternative operating systems, I decided to play with Pen Drive Linux this weekend...a portable open source operating system which can be booted to from a USB flash drive, or can be run from within Windows without rebooting (for those whose BIOS doesn't support booting from a USB flash drive), from a "virtual machine" environment. It is way cool!

Five must-have apps for a new Linux install
Having re-installed a brand new copy of Ubuntu and required updates, there are a few applications that I immediately download because, without them, I would not be able to do most of my day-to-day work. Here, in no particular order, are the five application or tools I have to have but aren’t included in a default Ubuntu install.

Free POP3 and SMTP access to Yahoo! Mail using YPOPS! in Ubuntu
YPOPs! is an application that provides POP3 and SMTP access to Yahoo! Mail. This application is more like a gateway. It provides a POP3 server interface at one end to talk to email clients and an HTTP client (browser) interface at the other which allows it to talk to Yahoo! The same concept holds good for SMTP as well.It works with all know email clients like Outlook, Thunderbird, Evolution, Eudora etc.

openGEU - sunny Ubuntu - Overview & short tutorial
openGEU is another extremely successful Ubuntu child, running Enlightenment 17 as the desktop manager. Like gOS, another Ubuntu & Enlightenment distro reviewed some time ago here at Dedoimedo, openGEU offers a healthy refreshment of color and choices to the already well-established distro.

Eight Distros a Week: Epilogue
I have used more than eight distros — AntiX, Debian, Fedora, Fluxbuntu, gNewSense, Linux Mint, Wolvix and Xubuntu — but these eight are the ones that I use most, talk about most and would recommend to those looking for a distro.

Enlightenment 17
Enlightenment 0.17 is the next generation of UNIX graphical environments. It is not just a window manager, but it is also a desktop shell. A desktop shell means, a window manager plus a file manager, plus configuration utilitys all in one. They are not separated as usual. Now, let’s take a closer look at all E17 features.

New Default Ubuntu Wallpaper
After installing all of the latest updates to Ubuntu Hardy Heron, I noticed they made a major change to the theme: there is a new default wallpaper on the GNOME desktop. It is still based on the brown Ubuntu color scheme, but at least it is more cheery. I wonder if this thread had anything to do with the sudden change…

Gentoo Linux
Just out of curiousity, I tried Gentoo. I had doubts because it takes so long for everything to compile. After installing with a networkless install, I learned it did it with binary packages instead of compiling from source, so I had to ‘emerge -uDNva world’.

Tux Droid - Talking Linux Penguin
Now it's hard to deny that some Linux fans can be pretty evangelistic about their operating system of choice but I wouldn't have thought that that religious dedication would extend so far at to want an idol of the Linux mascot, Tux the penguin, sitting on one's desk.

Preinstalled SUSE Linux ThinkPad is good, but not great
I use, on a daily basis, three different Linux distributions: MEPIS 6.5 and 7, OpenSUSE 10.3, and SLED 10 SP1. So, when I saw that Frank Ohlhorst, my colleague over at The Channel Insider, had gotten his hands on a ThinkPad T61 with SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 Service Pack 1, I was interested in what he would find.

Linux Distros Everywhere
The last few days I have sampled a few different Linux distros. I have a spare box and wanted to maybe get a nice little media center setup in the living room. Its a simple task, one computer to rule the living room. So I set out on the journey of installation.

Bandits: Phoenix Rising Proceeds On Linux
At Linux Game Publishing, much of their attention as of late has been focused upon their port of X3: Reunion, which is Egosoft's successor to the (already Linux ported) X2: The Threat. However, outside of this space adventure title that shipped for Windows in 2005, Linux Game Publishing has also been working on a few other game ports, among which is Bandits: Phoenix Rising.
