gtkpod: A better alternative than iTunes
I have recently been inundated with questions about using an iPod (or iPhone) with Linux. I have written about Rockbox and how to “Open Source” your iPod, but for the average user, that is not a viable option (Firmware? Do what????). So instead I am going to introduce you to an application that, in my opinion, is much better than the original (the original being iTunes.) Gtkpod is a GTK application that allows the user to sync their iPod with Linux. Gtkpod supports first through fifth generation iPods and does, pretty much, everything iTunes does.

The Right Tool for the job?
Within the Open Source, and especially the Linux community, there are basically two options for replacing Microsoft Outlook: Kontact and Evolution. As you know, Outlook is an all-in-one email, calendar, todo, contact application that also publishes information. If you are an employee in such an environment, and you want to adopt a Linux desktop you will be very limited in what you can do with an Exchange server. Will either Kontact or Evolution fit into your environment? Let’s find out.

Tweak Ubuntu for peak performance
One of the first things I noticed after using Ubuntu for a while was how snappy the OS is, especially compared to Windows Vista (which in my experience can't even keep up with its predecessor XP). Then I poked around the Linux forums a little bit and found out that I could work even faster in Ubuntu by changing some default settings, and using a few of the OS's unique keyboard shortcuts.

Installing Ubuntu(s) on a Windows 98-era Laptop
My friend told me that his laptop wasn't working, and asked if I would fix it for him. As usual, I didn't make any promises other than that I would do my best. He also gave me two other machines which he said were significantly older and which I could have if I could find a use for them. This conversation was last week sometime, and I'd been too busy for most of the week to even boot them up.
