Welcome to another interview with a KDE contributor. This time we talked with Tobias König from KDEPIM about Akonadi and the TV series Lost.

Tobias recently blogged about Nepomuk, and from the comments it seems that people are a bit in the dark about what Akonadi, Nepomuk and Strigi actually do and how they interact with each other.

The exotic-sounding ‘Akonadi’ refers to both a mythological figure and the KDE platform’s central information framework. This article will dispel some of the mystery about how Akonadi will improve performance and integration, and how it is being rolled out into KDE applications.

At the recent Akonadi sprint, I decided to spend some time putting together a proof of concept for a web client for Akonadi. Here’s a screencast of the result..

Akonadi is the magic word for data storage for the KDE 4 desktop. Unfortunately none of the KDE 4 apps really use it. The KDE address book, KAddressBook, should become the first to do so.

Kevin blogged about the porting of KMail to Akonadi. He, Andras and a couple of other KDABians are splitting KMail into smaller components that combined make up an email client. Those components are then ported to using Akonadi.

Last weeks I've been looking (again) whether or not it was possible to create a working sqlite back end for Akonadi. The last time I tried was around august last year and by then sqlite just wasn't able to meet the multi-threading requirements that Akonadi has for its database back ends. A couple of sqlite releases later things seem to have changed.
