I was recently surprised to discover that many people are not familiar with WINE, what it does, or how easy it can be to make it do it. That, coupled with the recent post-beta, stable release of WINE itself, pushed me to help get the word out.
wine patches the black hole of code? Patches rarely receive feedback - positive or negative - on the wine-patches list. Patches that are rejected aren't labelled as such, or publicly given a reason for why they were. Hundreds of patches don't get in, that just need a tweak or two, that would REALLY improve the wine experience.
It's time for another round of Google's Summer of Code (SoC). The SoC is an effort that first started in 2005 as an effort to get students involved in open source code development. Google provides a stipend to the student and to the mentoring organization that helps the student.

wine-1.0rc1 was released on Friday, May 9th, 2008. Wine is now in a code freeze in preparation for the 1.0 release.
According to the Wine Release Plan, wine-1.0.0-rc2 will be due out Friday, May 23rd, 2008. It will be something like be the next to last release candidate for 1.0.

The Wine development release 1.2-rc1 is now available. The source is available now, Binary packages are in the process of being built, and will appear soon at their respective download locations. This is the first release candidate for Wine 1.2. It marks the beginning of the code freeze period. Please give this release a good testing to help us make 1.2 as good as possible.
Linux users really love Google Picasa even though it's not a native Linux application (unpack the .deb and you'll notice some wine.exe and other such files). Reading the comments from our "best linux photo manager / organizer" post, it seems face recognition is the feature that attracts people the most to Picasa.
