Have you been frustrated with speech recognition software in the past? I've used the top proprietary products, such as IBM's ViaVoice and Nuance's Dragon Naturally Speaking in the past. I've found limited good uses for them, but they're not entirely accurate, and they're reasonably expensive.

Codec2 is an open source low bit rate speech codec designed for communications quality speech at around 2400 bit/s. Applications include low bandwidth HF/VHF digital radio. It fills a gap in open source, free-as-in-speech voice codecs beneath 5000 bit/s. It is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL).

Text-to-Speech Software for Linux: If you've been using Mac OS X or Windows Vista before, you may be a bit disappointed to learn that there's no speech synthesizer or text-to-speech (TTS) application that is installed by default on your Linux distribution. SphinX is a great full-text search engine for MySQL. Installing the Sphinx daemon was straightforward as you can compile it from the source or use a .DEB/.RPM package but SphinxSE was a little bit tricky since it needed to be installed as a plugin on a running MySQL server. So if you use Debian or Centos and install your MySQL from a .deb or .rpm package this is how you do it.
