A universal installer for Linux could be in the works that would allow you to install software on almost every Linux Distribution. Nixstaller is an Open Source project that allows users to create user friendly and flexible installers that work on various UNIX like systems.

I'd like to see it. Looks like it's well thought out and is usable on servers and desktops as well. Plus, it provides an FLTK frontend for low-end systems and Lua scripting for customizability.
