Earlier this month the developers behind the Unigine Engine shared their latest update on this advanced 3D engine that's fully supported under Linux.

While the Unigine game engine may not be as widely known or used as the Unreal or id Tech engines, its capabilities and features have been increasing at an incredible rate. Our friends at Unigine Corp have published a 2009 development road-map for the Unigine Engine, their cross-platform gaming engine that is able to deliver stunning graphics on Linux.

We reported a month ago that Unigine Heaven on Linux is still trash with the ATI driver so Unigine Corp is continuing to hold off on releasing the Unigine Heaven tech demo with the OpenGL renderer that supports hardware tessellation until there is a good Catalyst release.

To help push the tessellation boundaries just a bit further, Unigine has updated its Heaven benchmark to version 2.0 and introduced more robust modes. Alongside the updated Windows client, Unigine has also unveiled a Linux version, so we decided to take it for a spin to see how it both performs, and looks.

Heaven is the most-impressive tech demo / benchmark yet, but when released in October it only came out for Windows with its DirectX 11 renderer. However, as we exclusively shared, Unigine Heaven is coming out to Linux. What pushed back their Linux release was waiting on functional Linux drivers from AMD.

Nexuiz is not the only open-source first person shooter striving for perfection even without the backing of a major game studio. A relatively unheard of game engine is XreaL, claims that it is definitely the most advanced open-source game engine.

Best racing game ever runs on linux!
