Last month's release of the KDE 4.4 desktop environment restored the faith of many after what has been something of a roller coaster two years. Even the most loyal KDEians found that loyalty stretched by the debut of version 4.0.

Not for me!

I felt like a refugee from a nice settled country, fleeing, one step ahead of the Anglo/US terror-forces.

I didn't particularly want to go to GNOME. It was a fairly unfamiliar country and I certainly didn't like their obsession with the hated Mono. With my homeland lying, ruined, behind me, I had little choice.

I probably won't live out my years in GNOME. I'll keep seeking the perfect desktop that lives in some quiet corner of this world.

Return to KDE?

No, the old ways are gone now and the green hills are still shrouded with smoke. Even the once-mighty file manager, Konqueror, has been demoted to a mere web browser under this new regime.

I have many bridges to cross.

On the contrary...

Although KDE4 really, REALLY botched their launch, I think their desktop is quite nice. It does bother me that Konqueror is reduced to a web browser, and KHTML has taken a hit in quality. Dolphin, quite frankly, is terrible. It feels like a total kludge.

But then, I look at some of the things they did accomplish with KDE4. Nepomuk, Plasma, Solid, Threadweaver, Oxygen, Sonnet, Kross. Sure, some of the apps aren't better for wear (Kopete somehow is even worse, as is Amarok), but the technology behind them is something remarkable. I think if someone were to take the time to port the KDE3-style applications that we all know and love to Qt4/KDE4, it would be just about perfect.

As for Gnome...eh. As a desktop Gnome is great from a usability standpoint. A lot of the Gnome 3.0 ideas (with the exception of Gnome-Shell) are fantastic, and their main goal is to not be dependent on Mono for their core technologies. At least there's some reassurance in that.
