As far as we can tell, on Dell's cumbersome UK website the price of the cheapest Inspiron 1525 with Vista home premium is £359. The same specification machine with Ubuntu is £379.

Comparing laptops with different CPUs

Unfortunately the links for the Ubuntu system seem to point to Intel? Celeron Processor 540, regardless of what I select. Their web page for Ubuntu does not work right.
It seems the guy ends up comparing laptops with different CPUs.

If I select this processor
Intel? Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5450 on both Vista and Ubuntu laptops I get
£398.99 for the Vista system
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&k...
£379.00 for the Ubuntu system
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l...

If I select this processor
Intel? Pentium Dual Core Processor T2330
both Vista and Ubuntu laptops I get
£359.00 for the Vista system
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&k...
£339.00 for the Ubuntu system.
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l...

Each systems have a third config option for the CPU, but one can not compare prices using that. (different CPUs, different classes).

So actually Ubuntu is cheaper than Vista with £20 in each configuration.

Also I could not help but notice that these prices match exactly the prices you mentioned, £359 for Vista and £379 for Ubuntu. So I doubt they changed the price overnight after seeing your post.

Maybe the guy has an excuse for mixing things up since changing places in the list for the two CPUs is indeed confusing.

Also available in Canada, now

They really made it hard to find on their site. http://www.dell.ca/open will get you there if you ignore the warning that it is not that other OS but the local search finds nothing. No tax in Canada for "Sunshine Yellow" but apparently we cannot avoid the M$ tax because Ubuntu is about $80 more than that other OS. Disappointing after this long wait. It is as if they wanted to be seen as selling GNU/Linux but they did not want it to be successful. I cannot understand how they are advertising GNU/Linux. It appears they do not want to be noticed by M$.

One man, closing all the Windows.

Seems fair: Ubuntu's worth more than Vista

I don't have any major problem with charging more for a computer with Ubuntu pre-installed. It's worth more than a computer with Vista pre-installed.

I'd be prepared to pay a little bit extra, provided they didn't "value add" any proprietary software. If nothing else, it would save me half an hour of installation time when I got it home.
