Banshee would probably have been a great application....until they elected to poison it with M$-Mono.

Mono arguments aside
Banshee is a pretty decent player, except for one thing: it's slooooow. God, is it slow.
Conversely, it kind of just looks like a Rhythmbox clone anymore.
