I like to play an occasional game of dota, the famous Warcraft III - The Frozen Throne mod, with my friends. It works perfectly with wine since I can remember (so, probably feisty). You don’t even have to install it using wine, just launch your windows installation and your fine. In fact, I kept my initial Warcraft III installation all the time in my ~/.wine directory and never had any problems.

I blog more than a little about Wine software. In the past I have run benchmarks between the most current pieces of Wine technology out there and how they compare with each other.

No matter how hard you try, unless you've committed yourself to giving up any and all Windows based applications, you tend to find yourself stuck in a situation where you must emulate at least one of these applications inside of Linux. This is where emulators such as Virtual Box and Wine come in handy to help you bridge that divide.

Vineyard is a collection of tools you can use as a replacement for Wine's default configuration tool, designed to make it easier to manage Wine. Something like this should really be integrated into Wine - just because Wine is for well, running Windows applications doesn't mean it can't use a native configuration tool.

The problem with emulating Windows -- or since 'WINE Is Not an Emulator' I should say: the problem with developing a 'Windows Compatibility Layer' -- is you end up having the same problems Windows has.

I was recently surprised to discover that many people are not familiar with WINE, what it does, or how easy it can be to make it do it. That, coupled with the recent post-beta, stable release of WINE itself, pushed me to help get the word out.

The last Wine review I made was to 1.0RC2 (release candidate 2), in which I already tested World of WarCraft, mIRC and DC++. I had no issues with World of WarCraft (tested using a trial account) which performs very well, without any visible problems, DC++ has minor stability problems and the mIRC scripts editor crashes, but otherwise, mIRC behaves good enough.

Wine's translation status page shows only 12 complete translations. We'd like to do better for 1.4.
