It seems as if even the satirists have gotten fired up at Roy Schestowitz, main contributor to Boycott Novell. In this link is an "Open Letter" that they have written for him. How nice.

It's too generous to call this screed "satire".

The level of discourse is falling here on FSDaily. If the owner of this site wants it to be more of a community rather than just a link aggregator, it might be a good time to intervene against this unworthy screed.

It also sounds vaguely threatening and seems to have been written by a hot-headed teenager who has too much time on his hands.

This is the most objectionable part of it:

"We will end in saying that we hope you read this, and rethink the repercussions of what you’re doing.

Thank you,
The Linsux.org Community.

PS: I find that it only takes a teaspoon of Anti-Freeze to take the edge off things. Why don't you swallow some?"

Not Satire

The overall tone seems to show that this writer truly means what is written; I don't find evidence to suggest that this person is acting in a facetious or otherwise non-literal manner.

I cannot agree

I cannot agree with the assertions of this letter that imply that Schestowitz intends to frighten and confuse the FOSS community. It is my opinion that Schestowitz means well in his work.

I also believe that Schestowitz is misguided. I cannot agree with the conclusions of Schestowitz that speculate upon possible conspiracies that guide the actions of this reporter's subjects. His speculations are nothing more than speculations until 1) his speculations come to pass or 2) there is credible evidence (there should not be reasonable doubt in the evidence) that really does verify Schestowitz's conclusions.

Glass houses

The linux.org community lecture Boycott Novell on the claimed inflammatory nature of his writing-style and urge him to show "love" and "acceptance" towards Free Software enemies like Microsoft, then conclude their sage advice with the sentiment;

PS: I find that it only takes a teaspoon of Anti-Freeze to take the edge off things. Why don't you swallow some?

Does that "I find" indicate there is only one person in the Linux.org community?

linsux.org, not linux.org

It does look like a two-person operation.

Lets focus on news and less on fighting each other

I would just like to urge you to turn your attention to the fact this site is for free software related news.

If you don't like an item that's posted just use the little button with the "-" sign on it to vote it down. Let's avoid making all these personal attacks. And to those who think they can get away with multiple accounts: I know who you are! I suggest you stop now so that I don't have to start banning IPs. If you can find some real friends to support your opinion great but don't bring all of your pretend friends along to the debate.

Anybody up to writing good directory software?

Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David Jonathan

Since the very beginning, directories (of any kind) have had a very central role in the internet. (I have recently grown fond of Free Web Directory. Even Slashdot can be considered a directory: a collection of great news and invaluable user-generated comments. As far as software is concerned, doing a quick search on Google about software directories will return the free (as in freedom) software directories like Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat and so on, followed by shareware and freeware sites such as FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and All Freeware (great if you're looking for shareware and freeware, but definitely less comprehensive than their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).

Is better education the key to finding better software?

Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward Russel

I read David Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software? the other day, which got me thinking about software directories in general. As David mentioned, many of the software directories one finds when doing a quick google search are free as in beer, not as in freedom. But what interests me is the software directories that already exist, providing a combination of both free as in beer software, and open source software. Sites such as Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download don't advertise themselves as providing free as in liberty software, but each of them have a good selection of open source software available... if you know where to look.
