The Ubuntu project has released the first beta of Ubuntu Linux 9.10 (Karmic Koala), which has already been favorably previewed, especially for its fast boot time. Based on Linux 2.6.31, Karmic Koala offers GNOME 2.28 and Ext4 as defaults, and adds "cloud" features and improved installation.

Based on my early look at Karmic Koala, Ubuntu 9.10, I think we've got a very strong Linux desktop distribution coming down the way.

I was telling you about my issues with scrolling in Firefox (see #6). Well, I didn't manage to fix that for Firefox 3.5 but instead, I installed Firefox 3.6 beta 1 pre (Namoroka) and the scrolling now works perfectly (thanks to Tinhed for the tip!). Also, basically everything feels a lot faster, at least in Ubuntu. This is why I suggest you upgrade to Firefox 3.6.

If there's an upside to the Debian community's recent attacks on Ubuntu and Mark Shuttleworth it's that there'll be more conversation between engineers on the two distros.

dmesg ("diagnostic message") is a command on Unix-like operating systems that prints the message buffer of the kernel. This buffer contains a lot of important messages from those output during boot, this can be used for diagnostic purpose.

The way Linux is created makes it difficult for a virus to function.

Ubuntu's keyserver, keyserver.ubuntu.com, has a lot of problems lately. I was trying to add the Pidgin repository to work around bug #389322 but kept getting timeout errors from the server. One of my systems did successfully get the key so all I had to do was transfer it to the others. These are the commands you can use to do the same.
