Moving my mother over to Linux
To save money, I cobbled together a computer for my mother out of cast-offs left over from my own upgrades. She doesn't need a cutting-edge computer because she's not a power user, but she does need a reliable machine to run a few basic applications and to access the Internet. I moved my mother from Windows to Ubuntu Linux, and the experience was a surprisingly smooth one.

ClarkConnect: Turns an Average PC into a Powerful Network Server
Ever wondered if it’s possible to get a full-featured server for your network that provides all the popular daemons (apache, mysql, ftp, mail, samba)? How about acting as a gateway at the same time by offering a secure firewall, intrusion detection and prevention rules, traffic shaping and bandwidth monitoring tools? Well, it is possible but unfortunately the time to install all of this takes an overwhelmingly long time - about 30 minutes.

Installing MyDNS And The MyDNSConfig Control Panel On Fedora 8
In this tutorial I will describe how to install and configure MyDNS and MyDNSConfig on Fedora 8. MyDNS is a DNS server that uses a MySQL database as backend instead of configuration files like, for example, Bind or djbdns. The advantage is that MyDNS simply reads the records from the database, and it does not have to be restarted/reloaded when DNS records change or zones are created/edited/deleted. A secondary nameserver can be easily set up by installing a second instance of MyDNS that accesses the same database or, to be more redundant, uses the MySQL master / slave replication features to replicate the data to the secondary nameserver.

Slowly Making Friends With The New Gimp
What's driving me to put Gimp 2.4 on my Slackware box (my main office) is that I can never again do a Gimp tutorial until I am set up with 2.4. The interface overhaul is just too massive; every Gimp tutorial currently published in print or the web has now become worthless.

Adding Avant Window Navigator to your Ubuntu install
Avant Window Navigator, or AWN is a neat little dock that sits at the base of your monitor and looks exceedingly nice. It’s a great addition to your compiz-fusion install (in fact, you need compiz or something like it running for AWN to work).
