Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Available Now: Windows XP $399, Ubuntu $349

http://gizmodo.com

The way Dell introduced the Inspiron Mini 9 was pretty inspired, so it's almost been depressing watching the steady stream of leaks deflate it into a now familiar device, even though it's only being released today.

making deals with M$

https://lists.ubuntu.com

"There is nothing new in what is being done with the netbook remix. It is not an edition of Ubuntu. It is not even a real "finished product"[...]There is no intentions to put proprietary codecs into standard Ubuntu - that would be against our stated principles."

Ubuntu has won the distro wars; now onto the desktop wars

http://limulus.wordpress.com

Basically, Novell and Red Hat won’t be trying to get consumer desktop market share, focusing instead only on the ‘enterprise’ desktop market; Fedora and openSUSE thus appear to be relegated to ‘hobbyist OS’ level. Ubuntu is now THE distro of choice for home use, with no major competitors, but I think we’ve known that for some time:

Has Dell Delivered on GNU/Linux?

http://www.linuxjournal.com

Almost exactly one year ago, I [said] "we must vote with our wallets. Assuming the Dell GNU/Linux systems are not hopelessly flawed in some way, we must all try to buy as many of them as we can (within reason, of course)." Finding the happy medium in FOSS

http://www.linux.com

Last year, Dell began offering Ubuntu on non-corporate desktops and laptops... With this offering came a lot of discussion over what Dell should include with each computer sold... comments ran the gamut from FOSS purity to legal questions to even questioning Dell's motives. Clearly the FOSS community is pulled in all directions trying to satisfy users. Is there any happy medium? Can the community balance the requests of purists and pragmatists and still release usable products?
