Welcome to part 5, the final article in our little series on the KDE 4.3 System Settings control panel. I first off want to thank the KDE devs for creating such a great desktop environment (DE) and for simplifying the control panel (now known as "System Settings"). The last time I had to do an article series like this, it took me 10 articles and nearly a month to pull it off.

If you've ever tried opening or converting .docx and other Microsoft Office 2007 file formats outside of Office 2007 itself, you've likely pounded your head against more than a few walls. That should be a thing of the past with OpenOffice 3.2.

When KDE 4.4 was released a few days ago, I just had to try it out. Here is a brief outline of the installation og the unstable KDE 4.4 ebuilds and first day experience.

If you look back on the history of OpenOffice.org, it makes the 3.2 release that came out on Thursday the 11th even more impressive.

KDE announces the immediate availability of the KDE Software Compilation 4.4 on 9th feb 2010, "Caikaku", bringing an innovative collection of applications to Free Software users. Major new technologies have been introduced, including social networking and online collaboration features, a new netbook-oriented interface and infrastructural innovations such as the KAuth authentication framework.

The OpenOffice team have made version 3.2 of the open source office suite for Windows, Mac OS, Linux and Solaris available to download. It offers numerous enhancements over its predecessor which offer both stability and speed benefits. Writer and Calc, for example, should now start twice as fast as in version 3.1.1.
