Nine years ago today, Oct 13th, OpenOffice.org was called into being. It has been a pretty successful 9 years, with OOo having achieved approx 10% market share and even more in certain segments and countries.

In the past decade, the open source model of software
development has gained tremendous visibility and validation
though popular projects like Linux, Apache, and MySQL.
This new model, based on the “many eyes” approach, has
led to fast evolving, easy to configure software that is being used in production environments by countless commercial enterprises.

The Linux Foundation rolls out some new member benefits this week, along with a membership classification just for students. Though there were already a ton of cool membership perks to begin wtih, new access to employee purchase pricing on products from HP, Dell, and Lenovo is a really terrific addition to the list.

Enterprises and other users deploy open-source software because it works. For those of us in the open-source vendor community, however, too often we waste time talking about issues that have relatively little resonance for the vast majority of users.
