Transcript of an interview with RMS for Radio New Zealand, conducted by Kim Hill on August 9, 2008

http://nb.inode.co.nz

"...They base it on practical values only and they take for granted that proprietary software subjugating users is legitimate; whereas I say, and we in the Free Software movement say, that users are entitled to freedom and that proprietary software is a social problem and we're aiming to correct that problem, put an end to that problem..."

Happy Birthday, Gregorian Calendar!

http://www.cogspace.com

"Here’s my official symbol for the year 2009 [...] The font is professional but playful, inspired by the rise of free software that helps us at work and at play, to connect, to share our ideas, our feelings, and our own personal worlds. None of this could be possible without the massive contributions made to society by the free software movement..."

Microsoft Applies for Patent on Pay-As-You-Go Computing

http://www.andrewgronosky.us

"I first read it onslashdot, but more mainstream media like cnn.com are now also reporting that Microsoft has applied for a patent on “Pay-As-You-Go” computing [...] I am reminded of Richard Stallman’s story, The Right to Read. When Stallman published that story in 1997, a lot of people laughed at it. Don’t laugh. It’s happening."

A holiday plea

http://psung.blogspot.com

"Shortly before the holidays I made donations to three organizations: the Free Software Foundation, Wikipedia, and Creative Commons. If you'll kindly indulge me for a minute, I'll explain why I think the work of these organizations is so important to an open internet and a free and properous society. Consider giving whatever you can spare (whenever you can spare it) to one of these groups..."

What’s wrong with Microsoft Windows Vista? - by John Sullivan of the Free Software Foundation

http://darthchaosofrspw.wordpress.com

"...There is a battle underway between those who value freedom, and corporations such as Microsoft who wish to profit by taking that freedom away. DRM and absurd licenses are at the heart of that battle. Please join us on the side of freedom by saying NO not just to Windows Vista and other DRM-enabled products, but to proprietary software in general.

Is your toilet economically sustainable?

http://humanist.roua.org

"...Today, your government is sponsoring Adobe and Microsoft through the licensing mechanism (by “generously” installing on the public offices’ desks Microsoft+Adobe, rather than Ubuntu), but it should, instead, sponsor the GNU, Debian and FreeBSD projects. These projects form the infrastructure of practical democracy, they embody the free speech in its most accurate form.

The Wrong Way To Sell Linux

http://blog.linuxtoday.com

It seems that anymore all we hear about Linux and FOSS is it's free of cost, and that desktop Linux is just as good as Windows because it's all pointy-clicky and you don't have to touch the nasty command line which is frightening and must be avoided, and "just like Mac and Windows" you don't have to learn a thing because it's all magic.

A Weekend with Eben Moglen

http://sreejithsblog.blogspot.com

"On the last weekend, I got a chance to interact with two eminent personalities who compete with each other in leaving their legacy in the minds of people whom they meet. While RMS is admired by thousands of people around the world including me for creating the Free Software Movement and for his uncompromising stand, Eben Moglen leaves his mark for his oratory skills, humbleness and humility.

What happened to Free and Open Knowledge?

http://trombonechamp.wordpress.com

Recently in US History class we have been studying The Gilded Age. Andrew Carnegie, John Rockefeller, and other businessmen ruled the US with such power that it made the government useless. When the government could do something about the problem with the cases that came through Supreme Court, it almost always sided with the corporations.

A balance of freedoms

http://www.fsdaily.com

We balance freedoms (sacrifice one freedom for another) everyday. We sacrifice the freedom to do whatever we want to live in a society where laws keep us safe. And we'd rather be safe than do the things that are illegal (well most of us anyway). So we sacrifice a freedom we wouldn't exercise (to commit crimes) for ones we do want to exercise (to live without being the victim of crime).
