My Pardus 2009.1 Experience
If you're a KDE fan but haven't taken Pardus Linux out for a spin in awhile, maybe it's time you should. Yesterday brought us Pardus 2009.1 which features the new hybrid .iso files, one of the easiest installers around in YALI, a sweet KDE 4.3.4 desktop, and a growing number of available applications. Google Attacks Highlight the Importance of Surveillance Transparency
It shouldn't surprise us that systems built to give law enforcement access to private communications could become vectors for malicious attacks. ... the culture of secrecy that increasingly surrounds our government's domestic spying programs not only undermines the rule of law, it's a danger to national security as well.

Three calculators for the Linux desktop
To many, geek = math && nerd = math. To others school = math && math = calculator. During my stint as a computer science major, the very idea of differential had me running scared back to my calculator. It was a must, and for many a symbol of intellect and power.

Back Home, with Debian!
By the end of 2004, I'd been running Debian ‘testing’ on my laptop since around early 2003, but after 6-8 months of woody, I was backporting far too much and I couldn't spare the time for upkeep. At just about that time, a thing called ‘warty’ was released.

Selling GPL Exceptions isn't Exceptional
Richard Stallman's willingness to accept the sale of exceptions to the GNU General Public License intrigues me. What intrigues me is not his acceptance of the idea. Rather, what fascinates me is how many people are reacting as if his comments are something new.

Monitoring User Activity with psacct or acct
An excellent program for monitoring users and applications is psacct. This program will work in the background of your system recording what all users are doing on your system as well as the resources that are being consumed. I originally started using this program when a client asked for a way to monitor his developers and what they were doing on the servers that they were working on.

Anybody up to writing good directory software?
Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David JonathanFrom the very start, directories have served a very useful purpose on the Internet. (One I find useful for example is Free Web Directory). News sites can also be considered directories: they index and categorize news stories! What about categorizing software? In the open source world you get Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat; there are still, believe it or not, shareware and freeware directories like FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and Freeware Downloads (although you need to be careful, as they are not like their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).
Is better education the key to finding better software?
Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward RusselAbout Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software?, it's clear that the topic of software directories is very hot. Most of what you find on Google, however, are not pointing to free and open soruce software -- or worse, they mix the two. Examples of such sites are Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download, which simply don't focus on "free as in freedom", and still can be used as good free software directories.
