A Patent Is Worth Having, Right? Well, Maybe Not

http://www.nytimes.com

PATENTS are supposed to give inventors an incentive to create things that spur economic growth. For some companies, especially in the pharmaceutical business, patents do just that by allowing them to pull in billions in profits from brand-name, blockbuster drugs. But for most public companies, patents don’t pay off, say a couple of researchers who have crunched the numbers.

I was reading another article on kernel trap the other day and I sat down and started thinking about how things have changed over the course of the 2.6.x series of kernel and thought I would review all of these changes and put them all in one place.

An Overview: Where Things Stand in IBM, Novell, and Red Hat

http://www.groklaw.net

I thought it would be useful, judging from some recent confusion in the media, to highlight the latest goings on in all the ongoing cases in the SCO saga all on one page, so everyone can follow the bouncing ball. That will mean some slight repetition for some of us, but it also will make it easier for those who don't follow the SCO saga as intently as we do to grasp the current picture.

Gimp Tutorial - Pebbles

http://penguinpetes.com

Here's a topic I don't see a tutorial on anywhere. While Gimp is NOT a 3D ray-tracer, it does have some plug-ins that perform simple 3D functions. We're going to exploit the "Map Object" plug-in for all it's worth, here. Then we'll look at a more common method.

I have been working on providing Microsoft Exchange capability for Akonadi on-and-off for a while. There is an emerging problem though: GPLv2 and GPLv3 are not compatible. My code is fine - it is "GPLv2 or later". The incompatibility is that Qt is released under GPLv2 (not "or later")

Ubuntu vs OSX: Where Ubuntu wins

http://greatsouthernlad.blogspot.com

I have always considered myself a prospective PC to Apple switcher. I like the way that the Apple interface and hardware looks. But the 'just works' slogan that Apple promote just isn't true. I have had issues with my wi-fi router as well that I have never had with either Windows or Ubuntu machines. There are work-arounds, to be sure, but then don't say it 'just works'.

Anybody up to writing good directory software?

Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David Jonathan

From the very start, directories have served a very useful purpose on the Internet. (One I find useful for example is Free Web Directory). News sites can also be considered directories: they index and categorize news stories! What about categorizing software? In the open source world you get Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat; there are still, believe it or not, shareware and freeware directories like FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and Freeware Downloads (although you need to be careful, as they are not like their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).

Is better education the key to finding better software?

Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward Russel

About Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software?, it's clear that the topic of software directories is very hot. Most of what you find on Google, however, are not pointing to free and open soruce software -- or worse, they mix the two. Examples of such sites are Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download, which simply don't focus on "free as in freedom", and still can be used as good free software directories.
