RC3 Brings SimplyMEPIS 8.5 Close to Final Release
MEPIS has released SimplyMEPIS 8.5.00, RC3 of MEPIS 8.5. "We've updated the kernel to 2.6.32.10. The release notes from the Linux Kernel Team indicated that they have been hard at work making improvements. We have changed the Live media to use isolinux."

Speed Up DPKG With TDPKG (Using A Tokyocabinet Or Sqlite3 Database)
dpkg is pretty slow in Debian-based systems, usually because of the many files which are stored in the /var/lib/dpkg/info folder. To speed up things, Luca Bruno created a project called tdpkg which uses an sqlite3 or tokyocabinet database for loading the dpkg .list files in the /var/lib/dpkg/info folder which makes dpkg a lot faster.

Windows Versus Ubuntu
Like most people I use Microsoft Windows and Office on my computer at work, and up until recently I had a similar setup for my home computer. But I recently changed to use the Ubuntu version of Linux and OpenOffice at home and and feel that both systems perform comparably.
