"Google released the Android SDK today and a cool video showing it off. Unfortunately this confirms my suspicion of an "open source" implementation that has quite a few strings attached. Based off impressions around the blog world, it sounds like there is no ability to build native applications, and everything must be developed in a java sandbox..."

Intuit slow on Quicken and Quickbooks for Linux
Linux desktop users looking for good financial software to run natively can forget about Quicken and Quickbooks. One glance at Intuit's website should be enough to convince even devout users of that company's products that despite Quickbooks for Linux servers showing strong growth, a port to Linux desktops is a long way off and a Linux version of Quicken is not even on the radar.

Killing the FUD of your own
I've just read the post by Brian Proffitt, regarding Microsoft's tactics in Africa. I have something to say to Brian:
Not everything a big corporation does is illegal. Yes, even Microsoft does most of its business in completely legitimate way. Now, you argue, that Microsoft has to "help" people choose its products?

Ubuntu vs openSUSE
I was glancing through the top searches for my site and noticed one string I thought I'd try to answer it. That search was openSUSE vs Ubuntu. Now, I've avoided formally comparing Ubuntu to other distros such as openSUSE or Mandriva before because in my book it's like comparing apples to oranges, but for the sake of those searching, I will try.

A Taiwanese network-appliance system integrator announced a wireless network security appliance that runs Linux. Drawing only 2.4 Watts, AR Infotek's fanless Teak 3018 is equipped with four auto-sensing Ethernet interfaces, plus WiFi, and targets SMBs (small- and medium-sized businesses).

This tutorial explains the installation of a Samba fileserver on Ubuntu 7.10 and how to configure it to share files over the SMB protocol as well as how to add users. Samba is configured as standalone server, not as a domain controller. For this setup, I will use the Ubuntu Server installation CD but the same installation procedure will work on an Ubuntu desktop as well.

127 million Oracle shares vote for open source at annual shareholders meeting
While seemingly a lot, 127 million shares doesn't add up to much in Oracle's world. 127,717,018 shares only account for 3.58% of Oracle's total share count. Last week ~96.5% of Oracle shareholders voted to reject a resolution that would have forced Oracle to consider the social and environmental impact of using open source. No big surprise there.
