Eight Distros a Week: gNewSense 1.1
This is the fifth in an eight-part series on distros I use. As the auto commercials say, your mileage may vary.

Meet the Anti-Nmap: PSAD
Having a great defense involves proper detection and recognition of an attack. In our security world we have great IDS tools to properly recognize when we are being attacked as well as firewalls to prevent such attacks from happening. However, certain attacks are not blindly thrown at you - a good attacker knows that a certain amount of reconnaissance and knowledge about your defenses greatly increases the chances of a successful attack. How would you know if someone is scanning your defenses? Is there any way to properly respond to such scans? You bet there is...

When in doubt, install Linux...
So kind of out of left field, I decided to install Ubuntu on my laptop at about 1 AM. I got the newest version, 7.10, and resized my Vista partition so using Computer > Manage > Disk Management > Shrink Volume so that I had 10 GB of unallocated space for Ubuntu (I wanted more, but it wouldn't let me). Then I popped the disc in, restarted, and installed with ease.

Why Gentoo is dead :(
I finally removed myself from all the Gentoo mailing lists. I did this with some sad thoughts. I had been using gentoo for almost 4 Years and it tough me quite a lot about Linux. Unfortunately I have been seeing the Gentoo project die over the past Year or so. After going to the Gentoo UK meeting in 2006 I noticed that nothing important / technical was discussed. It was all about the flame wars going on on the mailing lists.

Red Hat aiming to grow JBoss at twice the rate of RHEL
I saw that Jim Whitehurst, Red Hat's new CEO, is gunning for $1 billion in revenue within the next three years. Given that Red Hat did $400 million in 2007, up from $278 million in 2006, this is perhaps not all that surprising of a goal.

A User Interface Definition Language in Common Lisp
"...So how does it work? From the perspective of a web application developer it's very simple. You just specify the user interface in a declarative manner and the engine figures out how to convert it to HTML: [...] So, does any of this work? You bet it does! And coupled with closures-based actions, continuations-based control flow, stateful widgets, and a shiny new CLSQL backend store1, it may very well be the web development nirvana2. Download Weblocks, and see for yourself..."
