Want to Laugh? Another Tall Tale About Where Linux Came From.

http://www.groklaw.net

This is so funny. Yet another "history" of Linux. I'm deep into writing an article on the Apple-Psystar litigation, to rebut some of the absolute nonsense I see being written about it, but I have to take a brief detour to share something with you, so you can laugh too.

Why is The Bizarre Cathedral licence "non-free"?

http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com

For the past 26 weeks I've been producing the Bizarre Cathedral strips for Free Software Magazine. Every one of them is released under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non-commerical-Share Alike (BY-NC-SA) licence. Recently I've received a few pieces of mail saying this is a'non-free' licence and questioning my use of it here.

Perspectives extension improves HTTPS security

http://www.linux.com

Ah, cryptographic security: a boon to those who understand the algorithms, but all too often a lost cause to those who don't. The secure HTTPS protocol for Web surfing is widely accepted, but has one fatal flaw: users ignore certificate error warnings. A Firefox extension called Perspectives aims to close that security hole.

It's Time to Hack the Economy

http://www.linuxinsider.com

In the most recent issue of Phrack Magazine, I read an article titled "The Underground Myth," that makes a number of astute points about the demise of the hacking scene of the last few decades. This article caused me to reflect on my own personal definition of "hacker" and why I think we need more of them.

ODF Workshop in South Africa

http://homembit.com

I attended last week’s ODF Workshop in South Africa, and I really enjoyed the event. It was an excellent opportunity to meet people who work with ODF in governments around the world, exchange experiences on migration, talk about the new features on ODF 1.2 and talk a lot about other things that I really appreciate as interoperability and open standards adoption worldwide.

Are More Programmers Using Ruby or Just Window-Shopping?

http://ostatic.com

Since acquiring the Koders.com code search engine earlier this year, Black Duck Software has added more than 200 million lines of code to the Koders.com search repository. Black Duck says that an analysis of search requests reveals, "Ruby is now the fourth most requested language on Koders.com, after Java, C/C++ and C#." That's interesting information, to be sure, but what does it mean?
